Pathological neurological symptoms ULNAR Nerve Lesion

Client Sitting or Lying Down

Rest clients hand on top of their head
(either actively elevated through abduction or passively elevated by therapist)
Relief of pain Nerve Root Compression or Disc Herniation

SHOULDER DEPRESSION

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Upright

Therapist contrilaterally side flexes clients neck, while depressing shoulder
Increased pain Nerve Root Compression or Brachial Plexus Lesion

TINNEL SIGN

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated.

Tap the nerve at the suspected site of compression
At elbow: (between olecranon & medial epicondyle)
At wrist: (over the carpal tunnel)
Pain along peripheral nerve referral pattern PNS Lesion at point of pain

(At Elbow = Ulnar)

(At Wrist = Median)

PHALEN’S

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated

Client maximally flexes wrists together and holds for 1 minute.
Pain or tingling in median nerve referral pattern Median Nerve Lesion (carpal tunnel syndrome)

PRONATOR TERES TEST

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated

Client starts with elbow flexed to 90 degrees.
Therapist palpates the pronator teres. Therapist extends clients elbow while resisting client pronation.
Pain or tingling in median nerve referral pattern Median Nerve Lesion (pronator teres syndrome)

Client Upright

Have client hold a piece of paper between thumb and index finger and grip it as therapist pulls it.
Flexion of distal phalanx of thumb Ulnar Nerve Lesion

PINCH GRIP TEST

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Upright

Have client pinch the tip of their thumb and tip of index finger together.
Inability to do a tip to tip pinch. Anterior Interosseous Nerve Lesion

(branch of median nerve)
