VERTEBRAL ARTERY TENSION TEST

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Supine.
(with head supported over the edge)
Therapist places clients head in extension and ipsilateral side flexion. Therapist rotates clients head ipsilaterally and holds for 30 seconds
* Perform with care!!
Clients eyes flutter, Dizziness, Nystagmus Vertebral artery compression

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated.

1. Client extends arms with palms up.
2. Client closes eyes.
3. Client extends and rotates head.
Arms waver with eyes closed

or

with C/Spine extension and rotation
Non Vascular Cause
(if arms move with just eyes closed)

Vascular Impairment to Brain
(if arms move with C/Spine extension and rotation)

ADSON MANEUVER

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated

Palpate client’s radial pulse.
Client ipsilaterally rotates and extends head.
Laterally rotate and extends clients arm.
Client takes a deep breath and holds.
Radial pulse disappears T.O.S. (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome)

HALSTEAD MANEUVER

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated

Client hyperextends and contrilaterally rotates head.
Place client’s arm into lateral rotation and extension.
Palpate client’s radial pulse and apply a downwards arm traction.
Radial pulse disappears T.O.S. (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome)

ALLEN

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated

Client contrilaterally rotates head.
Client abducts arm (to 90 degrees) and laterally rotates arm.
Elbow is flexed to 90 degrees.
Palpate radial pulse.
Radial pulse disappears T.O.S. (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome)

WRIGHT

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated

Client hyperabducts arm (placing arm over head).
Palpate radial pulse.
Radial pulse disappears T.O.S. (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome - Costoclavicular)

ROOS

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated

Have client abduct (to 90 degrees) and laterally rotate both arms.
Flex elbows to 90 degrees.
Ask client to open and close hands for 3 minutes.
Tingling, Ischemic pain,
or
Extreme fatigue.
T.O.S. (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome)

PASSIVE ELEVATION

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated. (elbows to the side, hands crossed)

Grasp client’s arms from behind
Passively elevate the shoulder girdle superiorly and anteriorly.
Hold for 30 seconds or more.
Relief Phenomenon (Arterial, Venous & Neurological relief) T.O.S. (Thoracic Outlet Syndrome)
