HOW TO PERFORM TEST

INDICATION

Client Seated

Clasp hands together with one heel of the palm on the clavicle and the other on the spine of scapula. Squeeze hands together

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Standing

Ask client to touch hands together behind back by placing one hand over the shoulder (lateral rotation with abduction), and the other hand under the shoulder (medial rotation with adduction).
Inability to touch hands together (due to decreased R.O.M. in G/H joint) G/H Joint Pathology

APPREHENSION

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated or Supine

Abduct the client’s arm to 90 degrees.
Slowly laterally rotate the shoulder.
Look of apprehension from the client Previously Dislocated G/H Joint

PAINFUL ARC

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Upright

Ask client to slowly abduct arm to 180 degrees.
Pain at 60-120 degrees
or
at 170-180
60-120: G/H Joint (subacromial bursitis, rotator cuff tendonitis)

170-180: A/C Joint

DROP ARM

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Standing

Abduct client’s arms to 90 degrees.
Ask client to slowly lower arms to neutral position
Inability to slowly drop arm
or
Severe pain in shoulder
Rotator Cuff Tear

SUPRASPINATUS (EMPTY CAN)

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Standing

1. Have client stand with arms straight out. Apply a downwards pressure against client resistance.
2. Have client turn wrists inwards (as if emptying cans), then apply pressure against resistance again

INDICATION

Client Upright

Place clients arm at 90 degrees of forward flexion. Flex elbow to 90 degrees.
Forcibly medially rotate the shoulder
Pain in the shoulder Supraspinatus Tendinitis

SPEED’S

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Upright

Resist client’s forward arm flexion from neutral position. (concentric)
1st with forearm supinated.
2nd with forearm pronated.


(can also forward flex clients arm to 90 degrees, then ask client to resist an eccentric movement into extension)
Increased tenderness in bicipital groove Biceps Tendinitis (Long Head of Biceps)
