VALGUS STRESS

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated or Supine

Hold client’s arm in 20-30 degrees of elbow flexion, with one hand placed above the wrist, and the other hand at the lateral aspect of the elbow.
Apply a valgus force to the elbow by moving the forearm laterally while stabilizing the elbow.
Pain or excessive mobility in the elbow. MCL Sprain (or Instability)

VARUS STRESS TEST

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated or Supine.

Hold client’s arm in 20-30 degrees of elbow flexion, with one hand placed above the wrist, and the other hand at the medial aspect of the elbow.
Apply a varus force to the elbow by moving the forearm medially while stabilizing the elbow.
Pain or excessive mobility in the elbow. LCL Sprain (or Instability)

MILLS

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated

Palpate client’s lateral epicondyle.
Passively extend clients elbow, pronate the forearm, and flex the wrist.
Pain at the Lateral Epicondyle Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)

COZEN’S

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated

Palpate client’s lateral epicondyle.
Have client make a fist, actively pronate the forearm, extend, and radially deviate the wrist against therapists resistance
Severe Pain at Lateral Epicondyle Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)

LATERAL EPICONDYLITIS

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated (with forearm resting on a flat surface)

Have client extend middle finger against resistance.
Pain at the Lateral Epicondyle Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow)

MEDIAL EPICONDYLITIS

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Seated

Palpate the Medial Epicondyle.
Passively extend client’s elbow and wrist, and supinate the forearm.
Pain at the Medial Epicondyle Medial Epicondylitis (Golfers Elbow)

FINKELSTEIN

HOW TO PERFORM TEST

POSITIVE SIGN

INDICATION

Client Upright

Have client make a fist with thumb tucked in under the fingers.
Stabilize client’s forearm, and actively place the wrist into ulnar deviation.
Pain at wrist De Quervains Tenosynovitis (Abd. Poll. Longus & Ext. Poll. Brevis Tendons)
